Description
From the mango trees of the Dominican Republic to the streets of New York City, and from a one-bedroom apartment to the mayor’s office on the United States-Mexico border, this is the true story of a kid no one expected to make it.
Born in the Dominican Republic and raised by a single mother who did not speak English but worked tirelessly to give her children a chance, Robert grew up in poverty – sharing a living space with his brother and struggling to find his place in school and in a country that felt unfamiliar.
But he had something stronger than circumstance: faith, courage, and a mother who refused to give up.
In New York City, he faced language barriers, fear, and uncertainty. Basketball grounded him. Art and community programs expanded his world. And small moments of kindness helped him begin to see a future he had never imagined.
That future eventually led him to Arizona – where he opened a coffee shop, rebuilt community, found his voice, and made history.
He became the first Afro-Latino mayor of a United States-Mexico border city.
Caribbean Son, American Mayor is a story of identity, resilience, and the long road to becoming – shaped by sacrifice, guided by faith, and driven by the belief that where you begin does not decide where you end.
This is not just the story of becoming mayor.
It is the story of becoming a man, a father, an educator, and a voice for the next generation.
